Pug Pals is a 100% volunteer group comprised of pug crazy humans who fell in love with this breed. Pugs are little people in fur coats. They love to be near their human family and will follow you from room to room so they can hang out and play and sleep and just be near you. They are a happy, comedic and playful breed with an every wagging curly Q tail.
As a group we saw a need that shelters just did not have the resources to deal with effectively. The pug breed is very popular across this country and more and more were ending up abandoned in shelters. We work with Shelters as well as individuals to take these fur babies in and provide any and all medical care they may need. All pugs are placed with a Foster Home while they receive this care and get ready for adoption. Our Foster Families are also volunteers who take these fur kids into their lives and love and care for them as if they were their own until we can locate a wonderful Forever Family. Foster Families are a special breed of human with great love, patience and understanding that we could not operate without!
Medical expenses can run in the thousands of dollars depending on the medical needs of each dog. All shots are provided, worming if necessary, spay and neuter surgeries if needed, tumor removals, nares and palate surgeries, amputations, eye removals due to injury and disease, allergy treatment and the skin issues they cause, seizure medications, allergy medications. Anything they need we do our very best to make sure they have and are as healthy as they can be for their new home.
Pugs require a high quality grain free diet to remain healthy as well. This also comes at a premium price. The rescue provides for all the needs of each dog while they are in Foster Care if the Foster Family requires it. We have been blessed to have wonderful donors provide food from local stores to help with this expense as well.
Occasionally we have a dog come in that requires more extensive lifetime care or may have a limited lifespan due to injury or disease. They become our Hospice Pugs and remain in the care of a loving Foster for the remainder of their lives with Pug Pals covering their care.
It is also our mission to educate current and potential Pug owners in the form of workshops and one-on-one meetings ensuring the well-being and a healthy quality-of-life for the animal.
Through the generosity of our donors we have been able to make a dent in the need that we see, however there is so much more we can do with the proper funding and exposure to more volunteers to provide Foster Homes and support to all facets of the rescue. Adoption fees barely touch the expense that goes into transporting, providing medical care and fostering each pug we take in and re-home. It has been estimated that the average cost of each dog rescued of any breed in this country is $800. Adoption fees average $100 to $300 depending on the age and health of each particular pug we rescue. Much fundraising must be done to take care of the rest of the expenses which include transporting pugs from other areas, a wheelchair and diapers for Sparky, beds, collars, leashes, blankets, toys, and medications to name a few. They are all every day expenses involved in providing a good life for these rescues who have often come from very undesirable circumstances of abuse, lifetimes in puppy mills and neglect.
