Greater Monessen Historical Society

A nonprofit organization

The Society shall promote and foster knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of history in general and of the City of Monessen and environs in particular. The objective of this Society shall be to study, collect, and preserve for the City historical records and antiquities relating to the history of Monessen and environs and its people; to preserve items of current events that may have historical interest in the future; to interest and unite the city in a finer public spirit, through a fuller understanding of the traditions and history, both past and in the making, of our city and its neighboring communities.

Each March, the Heritage Museum hosts an ethnic exhibit that pays homage to one of the many nationalities, who helped to build the Greater Monessen area. In past years, we have done exhibits highlighting the Italians, Greeks, American Indians, Slovaks, Polish, African Americans, Jewish, Croatians, and Finns. Displays with photos, costumes, music, art and items of cultural and historical significance are arranged by categories that convey the importance of each nationality. Local volunteers, who belong to each nationality, serve as consultants. Interesting lectures and demonstrations that mirror the exhibit are included each year.
