Greater Washington Coalition for Cancer Survivors Inc

A nonprofit organization

Mission

GWCCS was founded by Washington-area members of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) in 1988 as an associate member of NCCS. In 1998, GWCCS became an independent 501(c)(3) organization. GWCCS, a strong independent voice for local survivors, is comprised of survivors, their families and friends, oncology and social work professionals, and health care organizations. Working with local hospitals and support groups, GWCCS provides critical information and personal contacts to survivors, particularly those who are newly-diagnosed and those in the minority community.

Programs

GWCCS provides information through a variety of publications; a quarterly newsletter, an annual Cancer Support Group and Internet Guide, special publications, such as a hospice guide, and listings of upcoming events. Much of this information is now available on the GWCCS web site as well. GWCCS also sponsors information programs on topics such as empowerment tools for survivors, insurance issues and the side effects of chemotherapy.
