Bay Area Day of Giving update:

Our Bay Area Day of Giving, held on May 4, 2017, was a success! Thank you for helping us surpass our Bay Area Day of Giving goal.

We want to share our thanks to everyone who answered our matching challenge from Tundra Glacier Fund, Board member Bob Oxenburgh, and an anonymous donor.  With the support of donors like you, we exceeded our $2,500 goal by 40% and received many wonderful words of support from our community. Thank you--we're so proud of our an amazing community!

Why should I give?

Greenbelt Alliance is the Bay Area’s leading advocate for open space, conservation, and smart growth and here is an example of what environmental leaders are saying about our work:

“The San Francisco Bay Area’s natural lands provide fresh water, wildlife habitat, and protection against the effects of climate change. Defending these lands from being consumed is vital. Greenbelt Alliance’s work on forward-thinking and creative policies to save these places is critical to the future of the Bay Area.”

- Terry Tamminen, CEO – Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

For nearly 60 years, we have guided countless policy decisions that make the Bay Area the one-of-a-kind place it is today. Instead of expanding outward to accommodate a rapidly growing population, we believe it is better for our environment, economy, and our communities to reinvest in our cities and towns in ways that benefit all Bay Area residents. We envision a Bay Area where our natural and agricultural lands are protected and where our cities and towns provide thriving neighborhoods for everyone. Your gift will help us secure the match from our challenge donors and help fund our continued efforts to turn our shared vision for the Bay Area into reality.

What is my donation supporting?

We rely on the support of donors like you to make a difference in the Bay Area. Here are some of the most current highlights of our work:

  • Publishing At Risk: The Bay Area’s Greenbelt. This is our definitive research on the farms, ranches, and natural areas at risk of being lost forever to sprawl development. It brings to light—out of the depths of planning documents—what the region’s future could hold if we do not stop sprawl. 293,100 acres of farms, ranches, and natural lands are at risk of development over the next 30 years.
Of that land, 63,500 acres are likely to be consumed in the next 10 years.
These lands are at risk, but there’s still time to speak up and save them! You can help by making a gift today.

  • Protecting critical habitat in Coyote Valley: Coyote Valley is 7,400 acres of greenbelt lands between San Jose and Morgan Hill. It is home to lush farmland and a vast open space preserve, providing an awe-inspiring landscape to explore. For decades, Greenbelt Alliance and our partners have protected Coyote Valley from inappropriate development—from technology campuses to sprawling subdivisions. Today, we are working to protect the valley, permanently. Will you help us with your financial support?

  • Fighting Sprawl in Antioch: Antioch is currently in the crosshairs of one of the largest sprawl development proposals in the entire Bay Area – the Sand Creek Focus Area. In February Greenbelt Alliance and our partner organizations hosted a hugely successful community forum with nearly 200 people in attendance. As a direct result of this turnout, the city’s mayor created “Listening Forums” to help residents have a say in the future of their city. Help us continue working with the community in Antioch to have their voices heard in how their city grows. Make a gift now.

  • Plan Bay Area 2040: This regional plan is a blueprint for how our region grows over the next generation, and it's critical that it stays on track to lay out a vision for making our communities more sustainable and inclusive. Greenbelt Alliance continues to ensure that Plan Bay Area 2040 maintains its "no sprawl" vision and calls for focusing new homes and jobs near transit, with homes we can all afford while expanding our network of protected natural and agricultural lands. Your gift will help us fight to keep this vision on track as we testify at workshops and hearings on the draft plan in all nine Bay Area counties.

Be a part of our work! Thank you for stepping up and partnering with us in our shared vision for our region!
