GreenTown Los Altos

GreenTown Los Altos is a grassroots initiative of residents and businesses in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. 

We focus on improvements in 4 key areas: Water, Waste (sustainability), Watts (energy) and WoW (Walk or Wheel) plus a range of community events.

Specific successes?

- Water events like grey water seminars and native plant education teach techniques for “drought survival” and our “Lawn Be Gone” campaign encourages an array of techniques for lowering landscape water use.

- Our Waste program increased the amount of waste diverted from the landfill through recycling and composting by 17%, as previously 46% went to landfill versus 29% now. And we have more goals in the pipeline.

- As part our Watts program, we promote energy efficiency and the use of clean energy. Our current, “Unleash The Power On Your Roof” campaign, encourages installing solar via an attractive, time limited offer.  The goal is increase solar installations, by 10% this year.

- Through WoW, we've reduced the number of school car trips, with more than 57% of students now biking to school. Through education, we teach bike and pedestrian safety and bike maintenance to ensure safe biking.

- With community events like our reCYCLE bike drive we put your unused “wheels”, fixed up, into the lives of those in need for biking to school, work or even for pleasure.
