Roma (Gypsy) children are the latest victims of an 800-year cycle of ignorance and poverty. We are helping them break that cycle.

The Roma are a distinct people group with common language and history much of which they have preserved for hundreds of years.  Roma are the largest minority group in Europe and there are estimated to be between 7 and 15 million in Europe today. They have been stigmatized for generations as "Gypsies" and they face staggering prejudice. When they arrived in Europe about 800 years ago, they came as slaves. Since then, they have been despised, rejected, often imprisoned and murdered. During World War II, the Roma suffered brutally under Nazi Germany.  Besides the Jews, they were the only people group singled out for extermination because of race.  While it is difficult to estimate how many Roma were killed during the Holocaust, it is likely that the number was near 1 million. Today they are the world's largest people group without their own homeland.

The majority of Roma people continue to suffer today.  They are the most persecuted people group in Europe and one of the most persecuted in the world today.  Most suffer from gross unemployment, limited access to education, inadequate health care access, and discrimination. Systematic poverty, a survivalist mentality, low education levels, different cultural values, and persistent prejudice have conspired to keep Roma at the bottom of European society.

A comprehensive moral and lifestyle change is needed if there is to be a real change in their lives. This is what The Gypsy Project is all about. We offer structured tutoring programs to young children, most of whose parents are illiterate and cannot help them. They are tutored by young adults who are college students, and who are also Gypsies, thus providing good role models for the younger children. We also feed them every day (for some, the only meal they get). Our program is executed through churches to insure that the children are getting moral and spiritual guidance in addition to academics. Without both, the needed changes will not occur. That is why The Gypsy Project is working where many others have failed. We are trying to deal with the whole problem, not just one part of it! Please join us today!! Change the life of a child!
