Louisiana Hibernian Charity

A nonprofit organization

The Louisiana Hibernian Charity (LHC) was formed in 2013 to develop a 4-acre park that celebrates 300 years of Irish New Orleans history. At the heart of Hibernian Memorial Park is the Celtic Cross Monument located on the filled-in site of the New Basin Canal in New Orleans' West End neighborhood. The monument, which was dedicated in 1990 to honor the Irish laborers who built the canal in the 1800's, is the heart of the vibrant public green space that spotlights the city's link to Ireland.

Through the generosity of the State of Louisiana, the Emigrant Support Programme of Ireland, The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, the Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office, the New Orleans Hash House Harriers, the Lakefront Management Authority and community members, the LHC completed construction of on an Irish History Plaza flanking the Celtic Cross Monument in Hibernian Memorial Park. A bluestone walkway features six interpretive panels tracing the rich and compelling history of the Irish in New Orleans. The panels contain archival photographs, historic newspaper clippings, maps, graphics and text to help bring to life the multi-faceted story of the Irish of the Crescent City.

The next phase of the park is an expansion on the south side of the 4-acre site that will further commemorate and honor the city's Irish. Phase II will explore the contribution of the Irish of New Orleans to the city's vibrant culture, including links to music, food and celebrations. Hibernian Memorial Park commemorates the enduring connection between Ireland and New Orleans. With additional sidewalks and lighting the park provides an opportunity for socialization and learning in Lakeview.
