The Half Moon Bay High School Boosters Athletics Corp (BAC) is dedicated to supporting athletics at Half Moon Bay High School through volunteerism, community involvement, and fund raising efforts. Proceeds go directly to funding our Athletic Trainer program, 26 sports programs, uniform & equipment purchases, and student-athlete & team safety improvements at HMBHS for the continuing development of competitive teams, academically successful student athletes, and school and community spirit. BAC raises funds through memberships, events and team fund-raisers. BAC pays for about 80% of the annual operating expenses of the Athletic Program for over 480 student-athletes.
In a typical year BAC raises money at a number of in person events (eg Black and Orange Ball) and individual teams have booths and activities at the Pumpkin Festival, which were (like so many events) cancelled.
Run 100% by volunteers, BAC is a 501-C-3 non-profit corporation
John Nazar, Principal, Half Moon Bay HS
"The Cougar Boosters are the life blood of the Half Moon Bay High School Athletic program. Without the tremendous financial and physical support of this amazing group of volunteers, we would not be able to offer the quantity nor the quality of interscholastic sports we currently do. We see a clear connection of academic success for our students who participate in athletics as well as the development of teamwork, social skills and increased confidence. The boosters fund our athletic trainer, most of our coaches and fees, and unfortunately, costs continue to increase. Any support they can get to help them meet their mission would be greatly appreciated."
Deanna Rocha Tower | Assistant Principal Half Moon Bay High School
"I have witnessed firsthand the impact Cougar Boosters has on our Athletic Program, both as a former athlete and coach of HMBHS, and now the Assistant Principal who works with our Athletic Program. Due to financial constraints, at one point our sports program, a program in which over 60% of our students participate, was in jeopardy of continuing. Cougar Boosters worked collaboratively with Cabrillo Unified School District to ensure a solid lifeline for HMBHS athletics. Members of our Cougar Boosters volunteer hours and hours of their time to work at our athletic events, organize several fundraisers for the program, and support each and every one of our teams. HMBHS cannot thank Cougar Boosters enough for their continued support."
Stephanie Roberts - Assistant Coach at Half Moon Bay High School
My name is Stephanie Roberts and I was the assistant coach for HMB XC and Track for over 5 years. I could write about how important community, social engagement, teamwork and exercising is to a young adult's mental health but this is well documented. There is a more personal angle that I discovered by accident that is also very powerful. It is the relationship between the young adult (athlete) and their coach. What we don't know as a coach is what is happening at home or what the personal struggles are for that athlete (unless they tell you of course). To make this point, I would like to tell you a story.
About 3 years ago, the mother of an athlete stopped me in the grocery store. With many tears she went on to tell me the profound impact that I had in her son's life. She was married to an abusive man and her son would stay at school late so his time at home was minimized. She went on to say that when he came home he would always talk about you and how you made him feel. She added that she felt like she wasn't there for her son when she should have been and wanted to thank me for being there for him. The thing is, I didn't know I was doing this. We don't know the impact we have. It is significant.
Sometimes school, or specifically athletics, are the normal the athletes have been home life is dysfunctional.
