Habitat for Humanity of Broward County, FL

A nonprofit organization

Habitat Broward offers families a “hand up” not a “hand out.” Families who are unable to qualify for conventional financing and are willing to work hard to improve their lives and the lives of their children are selected into our program based on: need; willingness to partner by contributing 500 hours of sweat equity and attending homebuyer education workshops; ability to re-pay a no-profit, zero-interest mortgage on a monthly basis. Habitat Broward believes that the families’ investment of “sweat equity” increases their pride in homeownership, and thus increased their desire to maintain their home as well as their neighborhood. Some homeowners have maintained a strong commitment to the program, after moving into their home and continue to volunteer on the construction of homes and serve as a resource to new Habitat families entering the program. The Results: * Homeownership creates a sense of pride and stability among Habitat families. * Many of our homeowner families have reported that they have gone back to school, changed careers and/or became a better role model for their children. * Habitat homeowner families experience increased self-esteem, motivation and feelings of belonging being part of the Habitat program.
