Affordable Housing: A Critical Need

Home prices are skyrocketing. Rents are going up—that is if you can even find an available unit. Landlords are selling what once were rental properties, leaving even fewer options for those who need a place to live. This community's need for affordable housing was already reaching critical levels, and now essential workers in Collier County are squeezed out of the home buying market since their wages do not qualify them for a sufficient conventional mortgage. With few options, families are often forced to turn to unimaginable circumstances to put a roof overhead: living with family members, or even strangers, in crowded spaces where the cost of rent can be shared, unsafe apartment complexes, and run-down trailers or converted spaces where mold, mildew, and pests can be a detriment to their health. 

For so many of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home: families share meals together, talk about their days, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Right now, so many families in our community don't even have room to eat a meal together. They eat in shifts at small tables or in separate rooms, some share a kitchen with roommates or landlords, others don't have a kitchen at all and are relegated to microwave meals or have only an outdoor grill to cook their food.
