Helping Foster Youth: HMK’s 3-Phase Plan

Many children in foster care struggle with support and stability, making it hard for them to finish school or find good jobs. According to the National Foster Youth Institute:

  • Only 50% of foster kids graduate high school.

  • Just 3% earn a college degree.

  • 20% become homeless after aging out of the system.

  • By age 24, only half have steady jobs.

Half a Million Kids (HMK) is a nonprofit (501c3) working to change this. Our goal is to reduce the number of kids in foster care by 25% and place 20% of those who remain into safe, loving homes using the House Parent Model.

How We’re Taking Action:

Phase 1: Spread the Word & Find More
Families

  • Launch a multi-media campaign (videos,
social media, and events) to encourage more families to
    foster and adopt.

  • Educate the public on the realities of foster
    care
     and how they can help.

Phase 2: Strengthen Social Workers &
Foster Care Agencies

  • Provide new technology to help match
    children with the right families.

  • Support social workers so they can act early instead
    of just reacting to crises.

  • Help agencies handle the increase in foster and
    adoptive families
    .

Phase 3: Transforming
Group Homes

  • For kids who aren’t eligible
for adoption, we’re redesigning group homes to create safe,
    stable, and supportive environments.

By working together, we can help foster youth
build brighter futures. Will you be part of the change?
