The Hampton Roads Philharmonic (HRP) is more than just an orchestra—it's a vibrant community that celebrates the power of music and its ability to unite people. We are a diverse group of musicians that includes active and retired military personnel, music educators, students, senior citizens, and youth, all coming together to share the joy of music with our community.
Founded in 2013, HRP has been dedicated to building a thriving arts scene in Hampton Roads. Our mission is to achieve artistic excellence, enhance community participation in the performing arts, and create educational opportunities. We regularly program a diverse range of repertoire, from timeless classics to new works, commissioning fresh compositions each season to push the boundaries of orchestral music.
Under the guidance of Music Director Steven Brindle, HRP has been recognized for its contribution to the arts in Hampton Roads. We have presented over 25 performances at venues like the American Theatre in Phoebus and the Fort Monroe Theater, and our Young Artist Competition has been a highlight, giving young musicians a chance to shine in front of a live audience.
As a growing nonprofit, we are committed to sustaining and expanding our efforts through community support. Our fundraising goals for this year are focused on enhancing the artistic and educational impact of the HRP, and we need your help to achieve them:
Rehearsal Space Rental – Help us offset our annual rental expenses of $1,800 at the Ferguson Center at CNU, ensuring we have a place to prepare for our performances.
Young Artist Competition – Sustain this vital program by contributing to our $1,000 goal to increase prize money and compensate a guest adjudicator, fostering the next generation of musicians.
Development Coordinator Position – Assist us in expanding our fundraising efforts by helping us raise $2,000 to create a dedicated grant-writing and development role, enabling us to reach more donors and support our mission.
New Works & Instrument Upkeep – Support our ability to perform important compositions like Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 and maintain our auxiliary percussion instruments by helping us raise $1,600.
Your donation directly impacts our ability to continue these programs and ensure that classical music remains an integral part of the Hampton Roads community. Join us in making the arts thrive and inspiring future generations of musicians!
The Hampton Roads Philharmonic was established in 2013 in order to give local musicians the opportunity to perform quality classical music throughout the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The mission of the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is to inspire, enrich, and connect our community with classical music performed by local musicians. Our orchestra showcases the rich musical talent of the community in four exciting programs throughout the season: October, December, March, and May. A diverse orchestra that includes active and retired military, music teachers, students, senior citizens, and youth.
In order to foster musical talent in our community and to give young musicians the valuable opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic hosts the Young Artist Competition annually for musicians under the age of 21. Decided by an adjudicated competition, the winner performs with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as a featured soloist.
The Hampton Roads Philharmonic regularly features works by local and up and coming composers by actively commissioning new works each season.
