Our goal at the Hastings Literacy Program is to help individuals help themselves in becoming more productive members of our community. We offer classes for GED Test Preparation, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education in Reading, Basic Computer Skills and Citizenship Test Preparation.

One of our GED students was trying very hard to earn her GED as her employer had given her a set amount of time to earn her GED or she was going to be terminated for not having a high school equivalency. One of our AmeriCorps members started working with her one-on-one in the computer lab utilizing Internet mock testing sources and process explanation videos. As the GED test is computerized, this helped the student not be so anxious to take the computer GED test. Also, the student gained the confidence to join the computer class. In the end, not only did the student pass her GED tests, she was also able to retain her employment and even learn some new computer skills for her career. She is currently enrolled at Central Community College with a focus on education.
