From Vision to Vital Programs

Headwaters at the Comal is undergoing a remarkable transformationfrom a retired utility yard to a premier environmental and cultural education center. Your past support helped us make great progress in transforming the warehouse building into the Center at the Headwaters, a place for learning and community.  As construction nears completion, we can't wait to share these new spaces with YOU!

Over the past year, while active construction limited use, Headwaters remained dedicated to offering engaging science programs for schools, nature activities for families, community events, and ongoing volunteer opportunities for all ages.  Now, as we prepare to open the doors of our new community gathering space, we are shifting our focus to expanding and enhancing the programs that will bring this space to life.  Join us in this exciting new chapter, and help us connect our community to nature and the Comal Springs.

Help Us Bring the Center to Life

We need your support to sustain and grow the programs that connect people to nature, water, and the deep cultural history of this site.  Your gift will help fund high-quality experiences for learners all ages, including:

  • Saturday SEAM Series, monthly outdoor classes focused on science, engineering, art, and math topics.

  • Water Watchers Field Trips, perfect for schools groups looking for a fun, hands-on experience focused on preserving and protecting water resources.

  • Conservation Classes, cover topics including native plants, low-impact development, and DIY rain barrel workshops.

  • Volunteer opportunities include Stream Team water quality testing, birding, seed collection, composting, tree-care and much more.

Be Part of the Next Chapter!

This is more than a building—it's a movement.  Help us turn the new space into a hub of learning, stewardship, and connection.  Your support makes it all possible!

Who We Are

Situated on the banks of the Comal Springs and Blieders Creek, the Headwaters at the Comal will highlight the hydrological, environmental and cultural history of the region and will be a living demonstration of sustainable practices for the local community and nation.

The landscape design of this property will include the restoration of the Comal Springs headwaters and the transformation of more than 16 acres of asphalt into immersive native landscape. Plant groupings will evoke regional typologies while newly introduced berms and bioswales filter and cleanse stormwater before returning it to the creek. Public amenities will include a central courtyard, event lawn, display gardens, walking trails, outdoor classrooms, natural spring overlooks, wastewater treatment wetlands, composting facilities and more.
