The Healdsburg Museum & Historical Society (HM&HS) collects, protects, preserves and interprets the artifacts, documents and photographs that trace the rich history of Healdsburg and surrounding area through exhibits, educational programs and historical research. We hold these objects in trust for present and future generations, understanding that the ties to our past, when woven with the experiences of our present, build the bridges to our future.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

HM&HS has full and part-time staff, a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and a volunteer association of 100+ people. Through strong member support, HM&HS serves as a valued resource actively encouraging an appreciation for our heritage through exhibits, publications, resource materials and public programs for all ages.

EXHIBITS

Temporary exhibitions feature local artifacts, paintings, photography, documents and ephemera. Items from the permanent collection, augmented by items on loan, are periodically rotated through exhibitions and displays.

AUDIO TOURS

The Museum offers audio tours with every exhibition, researched and written by Curator Holly Hoods and produced and recorded by Voice-over Narrator Elizabeth Holmes. The audio tours impart additional information and deeper historical context to the artifacts and photographs on display.

PUBLICATIONS

The Museum publishes the Russian River Recorder, a scholarly quarterly magazine, and a monthly newsletter, The Review. The Healdsburg Tribune also features a Museum section prepared by our volunteers called "Flashbacks," offering photos and tidbits from past newspaper columns.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING

“Hands on History” focuses on young visitors by providing families, school groups, and youth organizations the opportunity to learn by doing. Self-guided history scavenger hunts and sponsorship of an annual Family History Essay Contest engage youngsters in a variety of ways.

SCHOOL GROUP TOURS

School groups are welcomed as honored guests on a private tour with fun, age-appropriate "History Hunt" quizzes. The school tours take about 50 minutes.

If interested in bringing your class for a school group tour, please contact the museum in advance to make arrangements. Contact us either by phone or email.

OUTREACH AND ORAL HISTORY

The Museum partners with the Healdsburg Branch of the Sonoma County Library and the Sonoma County Wine Library to present speakers on historic topics several times a year. Both audio and video recordings of oral history keep community memories alive.

COMMUNITY EVENTS & INVOLVEMENT

We participate in many local public events. Partnerships with Healdsburg Senior Living, the Healdsburg Senior Center, the City of Healdsburg, the Chamber of Commerce and non-profits present history outside of the Museum’s walls for people of all generations and cultures, local residents and visitors alike. Our annual “Historic Preservation Awards” recognize owners of well-maintained historic residences and commercial buildings.
