Healthy Cities Tutoring (HCT) is a tutor-mentor program providing K-8 students with one-on-one support from community volunteers.  At HCT, we believe that children can find greater success in school and beyond with the one-on-one support of volunteer tutors from the community.

We make a meaningful and lasting difference in a child's life.  Each volunteer tutor is carefully matched with a student to ensure there is a good fit for each child's unique needs and situation. Volunteers come from all walks of life including parents, senior citizens, high school students and citizens from service clubs and local businesses. 

We are currently providing tutoring and mentoring for 400 K-8 students in 11 different schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. Tutoring takes place once per week for 45 minutes at the school or the public library.  The tutoring is provided at no cost to the families who receive this support. 

We help students such as Mateo, who is a fourth grader in one of our schools.  Mateo's mom said this about his tutor: "Mateo's tutor helps to give him the experiences and vocabulary that he needs.  He helps Mateo feel good about himself.  A true gift!"

Healthy Cities Tutoring is an important safety net for the students who struggle in school. As one teacher wrote:  “In over twenty years of teaching, I have not come across another program that is so dedicated to supporting our at-risk students. Many of these students come from single parent homes, homes where English is not the primary language, and/or homes where both parents work late hours. Having a Healthy Cities tutor to work with is a real life line for many of these students.”

There are hundreds of children performing below grade level in our schools and with your support, we can match more students with a tutor.  We ask you to "GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE" and give to Healthy Cities Tutoring during Give Local America Day on May 2.  Every dollar donated will be matched up to $20,000 by a generous HCT supporter!
