Who We Are

Heartland Montessori School is an authentic Montessori learning environment providing an outstanding curriculum and underlying philosophy that respects each child’s individual growth and development. Children actively pursue their own interests and work at their own pace, developing independent thinking and problem-solving skills that will last a lifetime. Heartland currently enrolls children between the ages of 14 months and 6 years in our Toddler and Children's House programs. We also offer a parent/infant program for parents who have children between the ages of 8 weeks - crawling. Heartland is an independent non-profit run by a Board of Directors elected from its membership comprised of parents, teachers, and friends of the school. Our vision began in 1994 with a group of dedicated parents looking for an alternative to the traditional school system. For 20 years, Heartland has continued to develop its programs and environment to best meet the needs of our children and families in our community.

We are the only authentic Montessori in Western Wisconsin. Heartland is the only authentic Montessori toddler community, preschool, and kindergarten in Western Wisconsin. The Montessori pedagogy has been used for over 100 years and is now supported by the latest research. We're proud to inspire both academic and personal growth in children.

Our mission

The mission of Heartland Montessori School is to provide an excellent Montessori environment in which to celebrate and foster each child’s natural love of learning. We are guided in our pedagogy by the principles of Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). Heartland is a collaborative, working community of families and staff, and we are committed to cooperative governance by parents, teachers, and associate members. As we value diversity, financial accessibility is an important consideration in our visioning and decision-making processes.

With your generosity, we can offer Montessori to more families.

The Patty Borchardt Scholarship Fund

Give the gift of lifelong learning by supporting Heartland's mission to bring an authentic Montessori experience to as many children as possible, regardless of socioeconomic status. The Patty Borchardt Scholarship Fund is an ongoing fundraising effort that encourages businesses and individuals to invest in the education of future employees and stewards of the community.

Together, we can enrich our programs and enhance our school.

With your generous gift, you will be supporting an organization that:

  • Prepares children for lifelong learning by teaching cooperation, challenging intellects, nurturing the desire to learn, and engendering self-confidence.
  • Has a goal of the development of the whole child—socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually.
  • Is an authentic Montessori learning environment providing an outstanding curriculum and underlying philosophy that respects each child’s individual growth and development.
  • Offers a Toddler Community. It is a carefully prepared environment in which children can explore with all of their senses to meet their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs. As they explore, toddlers learn independence and follow their interests.
  • Offers a Children’s House for children between the ages of 3-6 years old.  The children are surrounded by a stunning array of hands-on materials that give them the opportunity to explore on their own, learning in a way that is natural and successful for them. Learning is a joyful experience for children.

What does Montessori mean?

In the early 1900s, Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori revolutionized our understanding of the way children learn. In her work with children of preschool age, she saw that they naturally absorb knowledge and information from the world around them, and they are eager to practice their growing skills. Montessori created a rich curriculum based on her findings. She introduced what are now universally accepted teaching and materials techniques, such as individualized learning and the use of child-sized furniture and materials.
