Hearts for Homes Inc

In Macomb County, Michigan  there are 1,600 homeless children lacking a stable permanent home with many are being bounced from relatives, to cheap motels, to couch surfing with friends.  The main reason is the lack of sufficient permanent affordable housing that has resulted in a crisis for low-income working families! The appalling result is that one half of homeless children are being held back one grade level and nearly one quarter are being held back multiple grades!

To address this problem, Hearts for Homes (H4H) launched its Affordable Housing Partnership (AHP) Program to provide rent assistance and security deposits to help working families of homeless children access permanent housing. While H4H has been successful in helping families like Ruth, a young mother of two young children, access a permanent home, she earns less than $12.00 / hour and is paying more than half her income in housing expenses. She is still at a high risk of becoming homeless again without additional supports. There is a lack of affordable housing units and a scarcity of rent subsidies to assist low-income working families afford market rents!

That is why H4H is also raising funds to provide short-term rent subsidies and guarantees to increase the number of private landlords who are willing to rent to low-income working families. H4H works with participating families to develop self-sufficiency plans to obtain other needed support services, learn budgeting and money management skills, address child care and transportation challenges, and explore job training, further education, or seeking higher paying employment to increase household incomes.
