Elaine is an octogenarian living in Amherst. As she aged, she could no longer prepare the gourmet meals she was always acclaimed for.

But last Friday, the smell of fresh challah bread on her table made her the center of attention in her assisted living home.

An equally appealing smell made her volunteer, Alice, popular enough to feel the pleasure of giving in more ways than one.

It is connections like this that make Chabad House at Amherst's "Helping Hands" program a win-win, sustainable project.

Help us reach more students!

Some of the activities we've done:

  • Students have provided toys for apprehensive young visitors to the local emergency room
  • Students have baked challah bread to be distributed to all residents of five local nursing homes
  • Students made meals and desserts ("Cookies and Knishes") and served them at a local nursing home facility
  • Students created beautiful holiday gifts for nursing home residents and local elderly
  • Students have sponsored blood drives in conjunction with Baystate Medical Center's Bloodmobile
  • Students have visited one-on-one with nursing home residents and elderly residents living alone
  • Students have provided educational experiences for local special needs children
  • Students have helped organize and participate in holiday parties for nursing homes and hospitals

These programs help students realize the difference they can make in our local community.

Give, and together we will expand our activities for the coming year!
