Heritage Works' mission is to promote youth and community development through cultural arts and traditions. Heritage Works enhances lives by providing programs in cultural enrichment, performance and visual arts, health and wellness, and academic and professional skills development.
In February to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rosa Parks' birth, Heritage Works presented Rosa Parks #5. Portraying Mrs. Parks' strength and character, the theatre work also told the story of 4 women (2 of whom were youth) in addition to Mrs. Parks who had refused to give up their seat. These collective efforts and the community boycott that lasted 381 days ultimately overturned segregation in Montgomery, Alabama and sparked the civil rights movement. Productions like these are a critical inspiration to performers and audience members alike.
A project to transform the vacant lots at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks Boulevards into a pocket park is underway. Heritage Works is using dance, visual arts, and storytelling to guide North Corktown residents and Burton International Academy youth to develop input for the final Intersections design.
"I learned how to visualize and think about what I wanted to be added to a park and how to express the feelings of others when creating a space or business." - Isis, age 11
Heritage After School and Health and Heritage provide dance and drum programs to youth through school and community-based classes. Hundreds of children and families benefit from these transformational opportunities.
Your support ensures Heritage Works programs continue through spring and summer 2013, with ongoing dance and drum instruction, instruments and costumes for every performer, and professional-quality production of all youth performances. Support Heritage Works today, and join us for an event this summer to see the impact of your donation!
