Herndon-Reston Fish Inc

In existence since 1969, Herndon-Reston FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) currently provides the following services:

• Donates direct payments of rent, utilities, prescriptions and similar necessities to the creditors of people in crisis.
• Operates an Info. & Referral line which handles over 100 calls a day.
• Provides free round-trip rides to medical appointments.
• Distributes hundreds of holiday food and gift boxes to the needy.
• Conducts free financial workshops for those receiving assistance.
• Manages The Bargain Loft, a thrift store, that raises money for assistance and offsets all of FISH's administrative expenses.

Many of the people seeking assistance from FISH have never asked for help before but have nowhere else to turn.

A recent example of rent help that FISH gave was to a father who was laid off after 22 years with the same company. He supports his wife, two children and a niece and fell behind in his rent and utilities. FISH assisted by bringing the rent current until he was able to secure two part-time jobs to avoid homelessness.
