Overview

Higher Ground Abodes' Level Up Program support youth aging out of foster care with shared housing, education and advocacy. These young individuals often face significant challenges, but with your help, we can provide the stability and sense of belonging they need. Our model saves public costs and transforms struggling youth into contributing community members.

Home Development Plans

In partnership with the Conant Gardens Neighborhood Development Corporation (CGNDC) and our Level Up Cooperative Camp participants, Higher Ground Abodes is planning to revitalize a historic structure in Conant Gardens, Detroit. This neighborhood, known for its rich African-American history and educational achievements, will soon offer a shared home for foster youth.

Higher Ground Abodes is dedicated to supporting youth who are aging out of foster care by providing them with essential housing, financial education, and life skills support. These young individuals often face significant challenges, such as homelessness and unemployment, but with your help, we can offer them the stability and sense of belonging they need to thrive. Our program not only addresses their immediate needs but also equips them with the tools to build a successful future. By investing in these youth, we save public costs associated with homelessness and social services, while transforming struggling individuals into contributing members of the community. Your support can make a profound difference in their lives, helping them to achieve independence and a brighter future.

Level Up Cooperative Camp

This year, youth have been central to our efforts. Higher Ground Abodes hosted its inaugural Level Up Cooperative Camp to guide foster youth, aged 17 to 21, on the principles of cooperative living.

Youth aging out of foster care face significant challenges. Within four years, 70% require government assistance, 40% experience homelessness, and 50% encounter income difficulties. Despite Michigan’s efforts to support their transition to independence, affordable housing remains a persistent issue.

The camp engaged a diverse group of youth who currently or used to live or attend school in the Conant Garden area. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, learned the basics of how to share a home, sought a suitable property, and developed a plan for implementation. The camp ran from June 1 to August 3, 2024.

The Level Up Cooperative Camp offered a unique opportunity for young adults leaving foster care to gain skills for cooperative housing development. Through education, empowerment, networking, and addressing systemic barriers, participants can pave the way for others to pursue sustainable housing and brighter futures.

Award Program

In 2022, we proudly sponsored the Kuumba Collective, providing them with both in-kind support and a promise of financial assistance to purchase a building. This support was aimed at helping them establish a residential-style cooperative that would serve as a model for sustainable and collaborative living. Unfortunately, despite our efforts and the collective’s hard work, the cooperative was unable to sustain itself and eventually closed.

Our commitment to fostering cooperative living remains strong, and we continue to seek out and support new opportunities to empower individuals and groups in their pursuit of shared, sustainable housing solutions. By offering financial and in-kind support, we aim to reduce barriers and create pathways for more people to experience the benefits of cooperative living.
