A structure that resembles a porch from a pioneer home will be built near the center of Highland Cemetery in Highland Park Arboretum.  This handicapped accessible pavilion will serve as an outdoor classroom where park visitors can gather for education programs, community events, or simply to enjoy the park.   The project will include construction of hard surface pathways that will allow easy access of visitors to the pavilion and the many gardens that are being developed in the park.  Benches will be installed along the pathways so walkers can rest and enjoy the park.  Landscaping will be planted around the pavilion to enhance its appearance.

We request financial support to construct the pavilion, construct pathways to the pavilion, and to plant additional trees, shrubs, and gardens.

Hastings Highland Park Arboretum was established in 2008 to beautify the retired Highland Cemetery, Highland Park, Hastings Museum, Highland Park Fire Station, Fisher Fountain, and Hastings Utilities areas.  The mission of the Arboretum committee is to provide a beautiful venue in Hastings for youth and adults to enjoy and learn about climatically adapted trees and gardens.

Trees, shrubs, and gardens that are found in the arboretum are marked so visitors can easily identify the plants and use this knowledge for their own landscape projects.  Education programs are offered on a regular basis where participants can learn about the different plantings.  These age appropriate programs are developed so all visitors can learn about horticulture and the environment.
