The Settlement School’s mission is to provide education and service opportunities for people of the mountains, while keeping them mindful of their heritage. While our mission has remained the same, our programs have evolved over time to meet the changing needs of the region. The Settlement’s major work today includes education and service programs that address critical needs of the region’s youth, promote cultural awareness, and build upon Appalachia’s rich cultural heritage.

The Settlement offers:

Educational services for children with dyslexia and learning differences through in school reading labs at partner institutions, afterschool tutoring services at host sites throughout the region, and a residential summer school on our historic campus;

Training for parents, tutors, and teachers, in how to tutor children with learning differences and dyslexia;

Workshops for people interested in Appalachian literature, folk arts, and heritage;

Folk arts programming for Knott County students and the broader community; and

Community service programs, such as Grow Appalachia, which supports growing healthy food, locally.

Donor Incentives
If you donate a gift of $15-49, we'll send you a copy of Kinfolks by Ann Cobb; a gift of $50-99 gets you a HSS mason jar mug; gifts of $100-199 gets you a HSS t-shirt; and gifts of $200 or more will receive any two of the previously mentioned items!

Student Success Stories
