Hive to Harvest was born out of a deep concern for both our local economy and the growing food insecurity in Monroe County. While reviewing our county’s tax upset sale list, we noticed a troubling trend—several small business owners and community members were at risk of losing their properties due to unpaid taxes. At the same time, through networking and outreach, we became aware of a staggering amount of high-quality food—perfectly good, nutritious items deemed unsuitable for grocery store shelves—headed for landfills.

We saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between surplus and need by working within a network of farms, local homesteaders, and partner ministries, we do our part to intercept food before it goes to waste and redirect it to Monroe County families experiencing food scarcity.

Our Pantry Plus sponsorships take this impact even further. Unlike traditional food pantries, donors in our program are directly involved in selecting food for their neighbors, fostering a sense of connection and shared responsibility. This unique model strengthens community bonds while expanding access to fresh, nutritious food for families who need it most. Additionally, our sponsors become brand ambassadors for Hive to Harvest by publicly sharing meal ideas made entirely from Hive to Harvest pantry ingredients. By showcasing creative and delicious ways to use pantry items, they help eliminate the stigma of using food pantries, encouraging others to see food assistance as a valuable resource rather than something to be ashamed of or a last resort.

Fighting hunger is a collective effort, and we can’t do it alone. With the help of our community, we can reach further, provide more, and continue making a difference—one meal at a time.
