My life wasn't always this good.

I wasn't born into the lap of luxury.  In fact, I never had any sort of lap to call my own until recently.  That's ME pictured on this Website.  These long walks at the park and endless belly rubs are perks I am learning to accept as my new reality.  Although this family puts out food for me regularly, I sometime forget to eat because I was conditioned to starve.  They have filled a basket full of things that squeak and bounce and this kind lady warms up blankets for me on cold mornings.  They seem to refer to me as "STEWART" and I don't mind because I was called a lot worse in my past life.

It's difficult to be spoiled when you have never experienced this kind of love and affection.  I was born and raised in a cage and a situation that didn't serve me well.  Things eventually got so bad that I hit the road.  I spent days walking around looking for food and my nights in search of shelter.  The streets are no place for a dog and I began to wonder how much more of this life I could handle.

Everything seemed hopeless.  I forgot what it felt like to be a dog.

Although the initial circumstances were terrifying, my life changed in July of 2014 when I was caught by the very humans I have learned over the years to distrust.  I was taken to the Holdrege Veterinary Clinic where they put me in a safe place where I was given food and shelter.  Unlike people from my past, these humans seemed nice and they took my photo and promised they would try to find me a "Forever Home"; whatever that means.  They gave me a haircut and cleaned me up the best they could.  Things were looking up!

A lady came in to visit because she had heard about me through the Holdrege Animal Shelter.  She promised to take me home for a few days and be my foster parent.  I had no idea this was going to be the beginning of such a good thing.  She would swaddle me in blankets and rock me to sleep.  She talked to me nonstop and reminded me that I was handsome and good.  She assured me that things were going to work out and she often used the word "rescued".

When you spend most of your life fending for yourself in this sometimes cruel world, it's hard to imagine being rescued.  I never thought I needed that but I also didn't know what kind of life I was missing out on.  It turns out that being rescued is a pretty good deal.

Since I have essentially won the equivalent of the canine lottery, I feel it's my duty to help out others that are in my situation.  Donating to the Holdrege Animal Shelter ensures that other animals get the chance to have a great life like me.  If you find it in your hearts to donate during the Give2Grow campaign on November 20th, the Phelps County Community Foundation and several other benefactors will match your generosity.
