Holly Rood is one of the oldest historic homes in Clark County. Constructed 1812-1814, this was the home of Governor James Clark and his family. Holly Rood was also home to sixteen year old Mattie Wheeler during the Civil War. She wrote of her experiences in a diary. During the Roaring Twenties the "Timber King" Floyd Day and his family lived in Holly Rood until the Crash took all their money. Holly Rood was purchased by the Clark County Board of Education and used for classes, offices and storage. It was slated for demolation in 1974, but was saved at the last minute by a group of citizens who formed "The Friends of Holly Rood". The Clark County Winchester Heritage Commission now care for Holly Rood. We are an all volunteer Board who does everything from cleaning to publishing. We also research the diverse populations who lived in and around Holly Rood, preserving and sharing this information with our community. We offer historical programs such as "The Spirit Walk", a re-creation of events in Holly Rood's past, or Catalog Homes a learning program and tour of the Sears homes in our area.
