The Homestead Soup Kitchen served its first meal on Thanksgiving of 1983 and was incorporated in January of 1984. A non-profit organization run solely by volunteers, HSK serves a hot lunch to anyone who arrives at our door during serving hours. Meals are served every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 1 pm. When the Covid pandemic hit, many organizations and businesses were forced to shut their doors, but HSK managed to stay open. In fact, we never missed a serving day despite running the entire organization with a just small, dedicated volunteer crew. In 2020, HSK served 23,351 meals, an increase of over 8,000 meals from the year before! In 2021, that number jumped to 36,788 meals, and in 2022, we served 32,444 meals. In the first half of 2023, over 19,000 meals have been served. At this rate, we may hit our highest ever meals served total!
Under the best circumstances, fulfilling our mission of feeding the hungry is an expensive undertaking (especially since we receive no government funding and rely solely on the largesse of businesses, organizations, and individuals), but it is more so now as we serve more people and have had to change our serving procedures to a more costly " to go" lunch format. This is where your generosity can help us continue with our important community work. We share a similar passion--serving the local community--and together we can continue to provide a much-needed service to our residents.
