Feelings jump up clearly for Amber B. when she recalls arriving at Homeward Bound in 2010, just a few months before her son was born. “I was jobless, homeless and pregnant and I had no other options,” she says. “I was afraid and I felt alone. I didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Today she’s found her own apartment with her thriving preschooler, Ace, who enjoys day care while his mom works as a paralegal with a Mill Valley law firm. “I’ve made so many changes in my life,"  Amber says. "I really think anything is possible.”

Now in its 40th year, Homeward Bound is the largest nonprofit provider of housing and supportive services for homeless people in Marin County. Over the years, the agency has grown to serve an average of 1,100 homeless men, women, and children annually at 14 inter-related residential programs.

In addition, Homeward Bound helps residents to become permanently housed and self-sufficient with a  variety of services, including: (1) case management services, (2) workshops and trainings in areas like budgeting, credit clean-up, parenting skills or relapse prevention, and (3) job training.

The potent combination of housing, support and training transforms lives. In the words of student Mike G., “If it wasn't for Mill Street and this training program, I’d be on the street. Now I’m going to have a new life."
