HELP HOMEWORK CENTRAL LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR EDUCATION

With your help, the children we serve are closer to graduating from elementary school and high school, and are getting a fair shot at a college education.

Many of the Homework Central students have gone on to graduate from high school; some have attended college and entered the work force. There is more to be done!

It is never just one life that is transformed; the ripple effect of your support will affect the entire community.

Meet Laura - a 3rd grader with big brown eyes. She is shy, reserved, and kind. Sadly, Laura was teetering on the edge of slipping too far behind to move foward with the most basic skills to succeed. Laura's mother was not able to help her with homework - she spoke little English and worked long hours. She watched Laura progress as best she could. A single mom, she faced formidible obstacles each day facing the challenges of poverty and a language barrier - a struggle most of us cannot imagine.

The tutoring and mentoring that Laura received over the course of her 3 years at Homework Central greatly improved her mathematic skills, reading comprehension and writing.

Laura is now a senior in high school and will be going to college to become a teacher.

What does it mean to level the playing field? The  numbers tell the story. Students who don't read at grade level by 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to leave high school without a diploma! Even more shocling - for Latino students the combined effects of poverty and poor 3rd grade reading is eight times greater!

Leveling the playing field means raising more money and helping more kids. It means making sure that all kids are reading in the 3rd grade and understand basic math by 8th.

Homework Central has been doing just that as our goal for over 15 years. We assist primarily Hispanic children, most from low income families, to develop their capacity to learn and achieve through homework assistance, tutoring, and family support. Our community homework centers, staffed by caring volunteers and led by fully qualified site coordinators, can mitigate the obstacles so that children can become capable students.
