Hope and a Home has a proven track record of breaking the cycle of poverty for homeless and very low-income families in the District of Columbia.  Hope and a Home began over 30 years ago as a program under For Love of Children (FLOC), which was founded as part of an effort to close Junior Village, a warehouse-like institution for 975 children whose parents were unable to provide for their care.  Half the children in Junior Village were there due to their parent’s inability to find affordable housing.  Hope and a Home was created in response to this need.  Hope and a Home rehabilitated 8 vacant properties in the Columbia Heights community to create 18 affordable apartments and develop a program of comprehensive support that has enabled hundreds of parents and children to achieve permanent housing, educational success and family stability.  In October 2005, Hope and a Home was established as an independent nonprofit organization.  Since its inception, Hope and a Home has helped more than 170 families achieve independence.  Our comprehensive empowerment model for creating sustainable change within families focuses on four main Keys for Change: 1) affordable housing; 2) rewarding work; 3) higher education; and 4) valuable community connections.
