HopeKids provides ongoing events, activities, and a powerful, unique support community for families who have a child with cancer or some other life-threatening medical condition. We surround these remarkable children and their families with the message that hope is a powerful medicine.
Instead of a calendar filled with clinic appointments and hospital stays, our families can anticipate fun outings like movies, sporting events, theater shows, and concerts. These grand-scale activities, which we refer to as HopeDay events, create precious opportunities for families to bond during a time that could otherwise pull them apart. At these events, all family members are welcome to attend, including the HopeKid, siblings, parents, and occasionally even grandparents.
In addition to our HopeDay events, we also host intimate gatherings like parent date nights, hospital visits, and coffee chats, which we refer to as our HopeCommunity events. At these events, families get to meet and spend time with other families like theirs who understand their challenges and struggles. It may be a cancer family meeting a kidney transplant family, but they know their life, and they speak the same language, encouraging immediate support and friendships. For those who can’t attend in person, our virtual events, such as book clubs, magic shows, crafts, and cooking classes, ensure that families can still look forward to engaging activities from the comfort of their homes or hospital beds.
HopeKids strives to provide events with a safe and accepting environment where kids who are bald, in a wheelchair, have an oxygen tank or a feeding tube are not stared at but feel like they belong. When possible, we prioritize privacy and safety, particularly for our immunosuppressed kids. And we take pride in offering all of our events at no cost, ensuring that families can focus on having fun together without the burden of financial worries.
"Having things to look forward to that are fun and meaningful do make a difference for a child that goes through so many medical challenges. It does change the outcomes of treatment. We've seen quality of life improvements; we've seen medical improvements. Small things over time add up to big things, and the fact that there is something good to look forward to has made a difference for her. We're not promised tomorrow, any of us, but the ability to do these things as a family and have something that will stick with us is nothing but pure joy."
