What is Horizons Albuquerque? We are part of a nationally recognized academic enrichment program that addresses the achievement gap and summer learning loss for public school students from low-income families that qualify under the federal income guidelines for free or reduced lunch.

Partnering with APS  We currently partner with Albuquerque Public Schools, specifically Los Ranchos, Griegos, and Navajo Elementary Schools. The program is grounded with a six-week summer school session held at Bosque School - which donates its facilities - and is supplemented with family engagement workshops, and after school tutoring throughout the school year. Horizons blends academics with arts, sports, and cultural enrichment as well as confidence-building activities, particularly swimming, guitar, and tennis.

Beginning with 46 students in 2014 entering second, third, and fourth grade, Horizons Albuquerque will serve 80 students and families this year with plans to grow to serve more students and expand to other sites.

Our Impact  Pre and post testing using STAR and DIBELS shows that in the two years since the program began, students who started the program at below grade level have gained an average of 3 months of learning in reading and 4.7 months in math over the summer. Students at grade level are starting the new school year 2 months ahead in reading and 2.7 months ahead in math thus reversing the typical “summer slide.”
