Horizons at St. Richard's Episcopal School

Kyle is a Horizons student.  He could spend his summers at home while his mom worked, finding things to do on the street or at the playground near his home; but luckily Kyle's mom enrolled him into Horizons. Kyle gets picked up by our bus every morning and brought to St. Richard's where he is greeted by many Horizons staff members with a high-five and a smile. He eats a healthy breakfast then goes to his classroom where he is one of only 15 students that gets lots of attention and instruction from a licensed lead teacher, an assistant teacher, and a high school intern. When Kyle reaches middle school, his classroom will be on Butler’s campus in lecture halls and science labs, amongst the many resources on campus. Like many of his peers, Kyle’s parents did not attend college so being on campus each day allows Kyle to dream of the day when he will be a college student.

Kyle spends his mornings learning reading and math through a student driven, project-based curriculum. He goes to lunch and recess, and two days a week he engages in enrichment activities and the other three days he learns how to swim at Butler. Teaching the life saving skill of swimming is a critical Horizons component as minority children have the highest drowning rates in the country.  The confidence Kyle gaines in the pool by overcoming his fear of the water helps him set aside his fears in the classroom to try new things and learn new skills.  

After a long, fun-filled day Kyle goes home on the bus. We know Kyle loves his experience at Horizons because he comes everday and he returns summer after summer. We fully commit to our kids and families and ask that they do the same: once a Horizons family, always a Horizons family! As a result our attendance rate is 95% and our retention rate is 80%.
