Hospice of the Chesapeake's mission is to improve the quality of life for those in our communities experiencing advanced illness or bereavement through hospice and other palliative care, compassionate support and education.
In 2011 Hospice of the Chesapeake expanded its mission to care for children and adolescents who are living with advanced illness as well as support for their families dealing with the illness through a new program, Chesapeake Kids. Whether the needs are medical, psycho-social or grief counseling, Hospice of the Chesapeake has committed to supporting children and those who love them throughout their journey will illness and grief.
Chesapeake Kids provides quality perinatal and pediatric palliative care to children and their families in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties. We also offer counseling and support programs for children and families grieving a loss.
Chesapeake Kids provides pediatric hospice, perinatal and infant loss support, grief camps, and monthly support programs. Your support enables Hospice of the
Chesapeake to continue to expand Chesapeake Kids program and serve every child in need of care, support and comfort in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties.
Pediatric Care
Our pediatric palliative care team is committed to providing quality care, comfort and support for children living with life- limiting illness and those who love them in a place they call home. This interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains provide medical management of your child’s life- limiting illness, community education, psychosocial support, care coordination and complementary therapies and services.
Perinatal and Infant Loss Support Program
Our Perinatal and Infant Loss Program offers individuals and couples supportive counseling as they navigate their journey after receiving an unexpected pregnancy diagnosis. This includes care from decision making to planning through pregnancy, birth and death. If a child is delivered, our counselors and team work with the families while their infant receives hospice care either at the hospital or at home if circumstances allow. In addition to our individual counseling, we also offer a bi-monthly Scrap and Share Perinatal support group. This group provides individuals and couples an opportunity to meet and share with others who have walked a similar journey.
Our infant loss counseling and support group allows individuals, couples and families to explore their grief feelings and facilitate healing following a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. For those grieving this loss, the sense of grief and emptiness can feel isolating and deeply painful.
Grief Support Programs for Children and Families
Though each person and family grieves in their own way and each loss is unique, everyone goes through a process of grieving. Our varied programs and services are designed to meet the diverse needs of our children and families. We utilize a holistic model of care realizing that grief and life changes uniquely affects each person physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and socially.
Camp Nabi and Phoenix Rising
Camp Nabi and Phoenix Rising welcome children and adolescents who are grieving the death of a loved one at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center over an August weekend.
Camp Counselors support and guide children who are encouraged to share feelings and memories in a safe, accepting environment with others who understand their pain. While discovering they are not alone they learn about the grief process and explore real life coping strategies. As well as making new friends and having fun!
