House to House partners with Common Ground Montgomery to transform one under-resourced neighborhood, Washington Park, through investment in houses, businesses and most importantly, our neighbors. We started by moving into the neighborhood. Our neighbors asked us to address the lack of decent housing and the blight created by so many abandoned homes. We began doing very complete renovations of abandoned homes. Then we added classes in the neighborhood on subjects such as financial stewardship and finding and keeping a good job. As we earned the trust of our neighbors, we established a mentoring program. Any neighbor desiring a decent, affordable home must agree to meet with their mentor until they are ready to become a mentor to others. The mentor is trained by the ministry to address stewardship issues and encourage participation in classes if needed. The mentor also proclaims the name of Jesus Christ and disciples the family.  During this process, the mentor will report to us that their family is ready to rent a ministry home. We hope the family will eventually purchase the home but this is not required.

We are addressing unemployment with classes and economic development initiatives that bring new jobs to the neighborhood. We intentionally choose the development of families over hand-outs and short-term solutions to the problems we see around us. We live in Christian community and our vision is that all of our neighbors will enoy this abundance with us.
