“The country is so wounded, bleeding, and hurt right now. The country needs to be healed—it's not going to be healed from the top, politically. How are we going to heal? Art is the healing force.” Robert Redford

The Healing Arts Program at Hudson Hospital & Clinic is key to our culture of care. Our program started even before the current campus was built. Unfortunately, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to redefine our program. However, we are thrilled to relaunch our Healing Arts Program in 2022!

Healing Arts is a diverse and multidisciplinary program dedicated to elevating the healthcare experience for our patients, visitors, employees and community. Designed for therapeutic, educational, and expressive purposes it brings comfort and invites opportunity for contemplation, humanizes the hospital experience, and promotes healing.

With a committee of community members, board members, and employees we are:

  • Identifying local, permanent art including paintings, photographs, pottery, and water features for our campus.
  • Offering rotating local art displays and rotating employee art displays on campus. These displays will rotate quarterly and when we can safely gather in a healthcare setting again, these displays will be welcomed with an opening reception to the public.
  • Aiming to have music therapy available this year.
  • Utilizing aromatherapy as well. It’s noteworthy to mention use of aromatherapy increased dramatically during the pandemic. You’ll find pet therapy for our patients as well (let’s just admit that our staff loves it, too).

We’re also fundraising for a community healing garden on the southern part of our campus.  This new community healing garden will integrate seamlessly with the Jayne Bachman Linger Longer Labyrinth on our campus. We’ve spoken to countless patients, their caregivers, and staff members who believe in creating a place to heal on our campus. To hear a mom talk about the death of her child – to hear her say she wants this garden to be a place where she can heal and honor her daughter - is an unimaginable honor. Please consider being part of that honor.

“Clarity, strength and assurance are words I would use to describe the feelings and needs for a space like this, as a patient and as a mom whose child was in the hospital.” - Amber Thompson

Healing Art in healthcare provides so many more benefits beyond just being beautiful. According to Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing at the University of Minnesota “Many studies show that after a stressful event, images of nature very quickly produce a calming effect. Within three to four minutes after view nature scenes, blood pressure, respiration rate, brain activity, and the production of stress hormones all decrease and mood improves.” Rebuilding our healing environment will reduce patient and caregiver stress, encourage recovery and improve the overall well-being of our patients and colleagues.  Works of healing art make the walls come alive and transform spaces in healthcare environments.

The Hudson Hospital Foundation is raising money to both increase and maintain our Healing Arts program on our campus. Please consider joining us as we return to our roots and continue to grow our Healing Arts Program at Hudson Hospital & Clinic.
