Maui Huliau Foundation

Maui Huliau Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit serving youth ages 12-18 on the island of Maui. Our mission is to promote environmental literacy and leadership among Maui's youth through community-based educational experiences.  

Huliau literally means a "time of change" or a "turning point".  As a verb it means, "to recall the past".  Maui Huliau Foundation was founded on the belief that the key to positive change for our island and its resources lies in the education of our youth.  We also believe that the knowledge and practices of our past can guide us in the right direction.

Our three youth programs, Huliau Environmental Filmmaking Club, Hui Laulima and Huliau Youth Leaders all seek to educate and empower our youth to become future stewards of Maui's natural environment.  In addition to the long-term impact of educating our youth, the media projects produced by students serve to educate thousands of people about our island's environment and what they can do to protect it.

Since we began programs in fall 2010, we have involved youth from all Maui schools in environmental service projects throughout the island, the making of 13 student films, and the formation of an environmental leadership group.  In doing this we have also worked with over 30 community groups and government agencies to help pass on the knowledge and passion of experts in the community to our youth.  Because we love Maui, we feel that is is our kuleana to help our youth become future leaders of efforts to protect our environment.
