Human Development Center Inc

Founded in 1978, the Human Development Center (HDC), Inc. is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to providing the highest quality of services to adults diagnosed with developmental disabilities and challengin behaviors in order to help them achieve their highest level of independence. HDC provides group home living, daily life skills training, transportation, adult day training and employment to clients.

There are currently over 15,000 individuals with developmental disabilities in the State of Florida waiting for services and placement into agencies like HDC.

HDC was born out of the de-institutionalization movement; created to provide community based-alternatives to institutional placements for adult individuals who have a history of challenging behaviors in addition to a developmental disability.

Our founders included a school teacher, a business man and a psycologist, and HDc was setup to operate so every individual in the program who lives or works at HDC had input and influence on every aspect of their life, including where they live, what their goals were and how they want to achieve them.

The program started with one group home in Seffner, Fl. and quickly filled to capacity. Due to the critical need, two additional homes were opened on the large eight acre property. Eventually,a day program, and three additional homes throughout Tampa were added as well.

HDC has had an enormous positive impact on the long range quality of our client's lives. Without organizations lilke HDC, these indiviuals will often end up institutionalized,incarcerated, homeless or beign supported and cared for by aging parents.
