Humane Society of Jefferson County Inc

Since 1922, The Humane Society of Jefferson County has served southern Wisconsin and beyond, providing care and support to over 2,500 animals each year. We care about each and every pet that comes through our doors. Whether they are with us for 1 day or 100 days, we do everything we can to make our animals healthy, safe, and secure. As a private, non-government agency, we don’t receive state or federal funding. Most of our funding comes from individual donors: dedicated families, friends, and pet parents of the shelter. Our Mission

The mission of the Humane Society of Jefferson County is to improve the lives of animals in need through compassionate care, adoption, advocacy and education while also inspiring humane communities that foster kindness and respect for all.

What We Do

We have 9 full time and 19 part time staff members, including animal care staff, front desk staff, medical staff, and leadership. We also have over 200 volunteers that help keep our shelter running smoothly. For our staff and volunteers to care for our animals, it takes over 76 man-hours a day.

On average, we have between 125 and 175 animals in our care at one time, including 30 dogs and 120 cats. Our average length of stay is 2 weeks.

We partner with shelters all over the country to help more animals find new homes. We receive monthly transports from overcrowded shelters as well as emergency transports to aid in disaster relief.

Our Community Cat Program is a free service to Jefferson County. By Trap, Neutering or spaying, and Returning (or TNR) stray cats, we help keep the feral and working cat populations healthy. Each year, we TNR over 800 cats!

We care about our human neighbors too, partnering with local coalitions to share our resources and support our entire community. We provide outreach and student-focused programs to help educate and empower young people to be caring community stewards and conscientious pet owners.
