Humane Society of Wichita County Texas

The Humane Society of Wichita County is a locally operated 501c3 that is not affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations. We are not funded by any local or state governmental agencies, which means that 100% of our operating expenses come from grants as well as the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations within our wonderful community. We are more than a shelter; we are a soft place for fur babies to stay while waiting for their forever homes. We offer medical aid, food, shelter and love. All donations directly fund the care of our animals, and your donations never leave Wichita County. It costs approximately $200 per month to feed and care for just one animal: in total about $25,000 a month for operating expenses. 

Through collective efforts, the Humane Society of Wichita County rescues over 1,500 animals a year, which includes reaching out to the surrounding areas and lending a hand where it is needed. Thirty-four percent of our total intake comes from surrounding shelters when they are full and have nowhere else to turn. The Humane Society of Wichita County also takes animals that are removed from abusive and neglectful hoarding situations.  For the past seven years, the HSWC has achieved the designation of a "no kill" shelter. To receive this status, a shelter must achieve at least a 90% save rate, meaning that 90% of the animals taken in were adopted, reclaimed or sent to another rescue group. The Humane Society has exceeded a 90% save rate all 7 years.  

The HSWC offers several programs such as, our Rent a Rover, Cuddle Service, our Fostering Program and low-cost services to the community. Our Rent A Rover program is taking a dog home for the day or having a sleep over to see if he or she is a good fit for you and your family before making a lifetime commitment through adoption.  A small "rental" fee ($20 for the day, $40-overnight) is charged and will be applied to the adoption fee. 

With our Cuddle Service, local businesses can treat their employees to cuddles with dogs and cats in the workplace for $100 per hour. This popular program boosts employee morale and promotes a happier work environment. Additional benefits from this program are increased adoptions when employees fall in love with their cuddle buddies.

Fostering Program: Volunteers in our community can foster dogs and cats to help us free up kennel space in the shelter.

We offer low cost spays and neuters and other medical services such as vaccinations, heartworm testing and selling flea and tick medication for both dogs and cats. 

Last but not least, we love our volunteers. We welcome everyone to come for a visit during our business hours, if you would like to view our animals for adoption, walk dogs, play with cats, help our staff clean or just spend time loving on one the animals here at the shelter.
