ABOUT OUR SUCCESS

Freud is a seventh grade student at Washington Latin Public Charter School in Washington DC and has been enrolled in the HungryBrains! Tutoring program at Meridian Manor Apartments for the past four years. To help Freud succeed, we developed an individualized learning plan and hired a certified reading specialist to work with him on a one to one basis. The plan not only helped improve his grades but also helped him develop important social skills and build his confidence. Prior to his involvement in HungryBrains! , Freud was, by his own admission, just an "OK student." Today, he is one of our best teen residents. He mentors younger residents, participates in all community service events, and is actively involved in school activities. With the help of supporters like you, he now has an “A” average in pre-algebra and believes that if the program can help him, it can help anyone. “The tutoring program has helped me become a better person. My mom likes it. I like it. I hope the program continues for a long time to help people like me."

ABOUT THE TUTORING PROGRAM

The HungryBrains! Tutoring program serves low-income children living in National Housing Trust/Enterprise’s affordable housing communities throughout the Washington, DC. The program provides academic assistance in reading/language arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and the arts, while also promoting positive social behavior and cultural awareness through community gardening, healthy living, and field trips. DC Central Kitchen, the Children's National Medical Center, the 15th Street Presbyterian Church, Unity Healthcare, and George Washington University are among the partners actively supporting the program.

RESULTS

  • The majority of children participating in our program across all five of our Washington, DC sites improved their grades by at least one letter in reading or math.
  • Nearly 60% of participating children are reading at or above grade level. Five years ago, less than half of the children living in our affordable homes were reading at or above grade level.
  • Seven out of ten children now express support for eating more healthy options such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Property managers report fewer incidences of vandalism and fewer calls about disruptive or anti-social behavior.
