There is a critical shortage of health workers around the world. This shortage disproportionately affects low-income countries, denying basic health care to millions and limiting access to life-saving treatments.

HVO has been working to address this ongoing crisis by bringing teaching, training and professional development opportunities to local health workers and students of health care in resource-scarce countries. After more than three decades of work, HVO has witnessed a number of successes including:

  • Tens of thousands of lives transformed as health workers received education and training to sustain and improve their work. This empowered health workforce, in turn, strengthens health systems and improves patient outcomes, providing more and better care for the ill and injured in resource-scarce countries around the world.
  • More than 12,000 completed assignments in the past 34 years have left volunteers with a renewed sense of purpose and passion for medicine, a better understanding of global need, and sometimes even new and innovative skills learned in the field.

HVO has created a global community that brings together a diverse group of health care workers, professional associations, overseas health institutions, organizational partners and dedicated individuals who work together to bring long-term solutions to the global health workforce crisis.
