Who We Are
The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) is a non-profit organization (501(c)(3) tax-exempt) co-founded by world leaders in health care and strategy: Professor Michael E. Porter from Harvard Business School, The Boston Consulting Group, and the Karolinska Institutet. We bring together teams of physicians and researchers from esteemed academic and clinical institutions, as well as patient representatives, to standardize outcomes measurement per medical condition - to improve health care for patients worldwide.
Our Mission
We believe that quality health care happens when both clinician and patient are engaged and motivated to achieve the best possible health outcome. One reason that many health systems do not achieve this ideal is that they spend too much time measuring what clinicians do instead of measuring the actual results achieved.
ICHOM is transforming health care by creating a standardized Set of the specific health outcomes to measure for a given disease or condition. The existence of standardized outcome metrics will empower clinicians worldwide to measure and compare patients outcomes and to learn from each other how to improve those outcomes over time.
As a result, patients will be more likely to receive high quality care at the right time–which often has the added benefit of reducing health care costs by preventing medical errors and unnecessary treatments. And, as agreed-upon metrics for comparing health outcomes become public, patients will be able to use valid data to find the care providers best suited to their needs. How You Can Help
Patients and their care providers have the same goal: to achieve the best medical outcomes. Measuring the outcomes prescribed by the ICHOM Standard Sets will lead us there. With their dedication and generosity, our sponsors make our work possible and help improve health outcomes for patients around the world.
There are two ways you can help.
(1) Make a donation to ICHOM so that we can develop Standard Sets for more than 50 conditions by 2017.
(2) Donate to a specific medical-condition project (see below) so that we can implement the first four Standard Sets that we have developed for localized prostate cancer, coronary artery disease, low back pain, and cataracts.
