OUR PHILOSOPHY

  • We fundamentally believe that both consumers and businesses are victims of identity theft and fraud
  • We believe reduction of identity theft will require education and cooperation between consumers, businesses, law enforcement agencies and legislators
  • We believe that support and education of businesses has a strong positive impact on the restoration of victims’ lives and the prevention of further identity theft

 

WHAT WE DO

  • The Victim Assistance Call Center provides toll-free, no-cost case mitigation and consumer education to more than 11,000 victims and consumers annually, many of whom have been transferred to us by the FTC.  
  • ITRC advisors represent more than 50 years of case resolution experience and are dedicated to providing world-class customer service, and protecting the victim’s, or consumer’s, privacy
  • ITRC reaches tens of millions of consumers nationwide through its website, idtheftcenter.org
  • The ITRC’s consumer education and outreach efforts reaches more victims and consumers through an increased number of digital platforms which were made available during the past year
  • The ITRC maintains and updates more than 1,000 written documents, articles and videos in order to provide victim assistance and education on identity theft and financial fraud. In addition, idtheftcenter.org provides a large number of links to a wide variety of resources
  • The ITRC conducts research and surveys in collaboration with partners and sponsors resulting in white papers, fact sheets, and solutions to educate consumers and businesses
  • ITRC provides expert advice and commentary to national media, further informing businesses and consumers about engaging in best practices to protect personal information
  • The ITRC conducts training and presentations on best practices and risk reduction for both businesses and consumers 

 

 

HOW WE DO IT 

  • With funding from the Department of Justice—Office for Victims of Crime, we developed the ITRC’s ID Theft Help app. This app provides identity theft victims with the necessary information to begin resolving their case. Additionally, the ITRC’s app is designed to educate concerned consumers and provide them with steps they can take to minimize their risk of becoming a victim
  • In conjunction with this app, the ITRC implemented a LiveChat feature on its website which has proven to successfully meet the needs of the ITRC’s growing online audience
