International Language Institute of Ma Inc

The International Language Institute of Massachusetts (ILI) in Northampton, MA, is a non-profit language school launched 32 years ago. Our mission: To promote intercultural understanding through excellent language and teacher training courses. 

For the past 28 years, we have provided free English classes for immigrants and refugees in the Pioneer Valley. The classes have reached hundreds of highly motivated students seeking better lives for their families in western Massachusetts. Most arrive with little knowledge of English and are hungry to learn the language. They know that English skills are key to their ability to integrate into – and give back to – their communities and ensure educational and economic opportunities for themselves and their children.

Our Goal 

About two-thirds of the $174,000 cost of the free English classes is covered through a grant from the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. ILI is responsible for the remainder, or approximately $55,000. Each year, we seek generous gifts from business sponsors and donors.

Over the 32 years since our founding, more than 15,000 students from 89 different countries, including the United States, have benefitted from ILI programs, such as:

• Intensive English and Language classes: Innovative, student-centered instruction enriches understanding of other countries, enhances international travel, and prepares for university and career advancement. 

• Teacher Training Programs: Top-notch instructors improve our participants' teaching skills and qualify graduates for jobs around the world. 

• Volunteer tutors: We train community volunteers and match them with students in our English programs
