Whether it's a free noontime meal, help getting a food handler's permit for a new job, blankets and clothing for a newborn baby, or a food package to make meals stretch through to payday, the Indian Center is a place where thousands of people from the Lincoln community and beyond have found to come for support. We aren't an emergency shelter, but people show up at our doorstep with nothing, seeking direction and any guidance we can offer.

When a single mom hastily relocated to Lincoln to escape an abusive situation, she arrived and found that she was able to receive from the Indian Center a can of formula and diapers for her baby, a bus pass free of charge to look for a job, assorted clothing and household items and referrals for medical and dental care. The children were able to sign up for Christmas programs to receive gifts despite arriving after most holiday program deadlines. The family now regularly attends free cultural events at the Indian Center on the weekends for cultural and social enrichment. Completing the circle, her three oldest children have begun to volunteer their time to help our causes.

Our annual powwow in August is a great way for people to get in touch with their own Native American roots, or get some exposure to a different culture, without even leaving the city of Lincoln. We also offer talking circles, mental health counselors, and a sweat lodge for psycho-spiritual needs.
