In 2014, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Council Member Eric Ulrich visited the Borden Avenue Veterans Residence to donate over 1,000 pounds of food collected during the New York City Council’s Veteran’s Food Drive in partnership with the New York City Food Bank. Veterans are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity and hunger due to the unique challenges they face as service members and the impact of service on their families.
The Borden Avenue Veterans Residence (BAVR), funded by the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and run and administered by ICL, is a short-term housing program for veterans in Long Island City, New York. BAVR accommodates 243 veterans (216 male veterans and 27 female veterans). Veterans at the BAVR have case management services that include assistance accessing supportive housing and other appropriate permanent housing placement assistance. BAVR also has on-site medical and psychiatric services. ICL works closely with DHS and the Veteran’s Administration to provide coordinated and comprehensive services to homeless veterans residing at BAVR.
