Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies

A nonprofit organization

The Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is dedicated to improving the mental, physical and spiritual health and quality of life of women, their families and communities of color, particularly among marginalized populations using community-driven research, programs, training and advocacy.

Founded in 1993, IWES is a national non-profit organization that creates initiatives to heal communities, especially those facing adversity. IWES works with communities, schools, individuals and organizations to provide tailored health and wellness services that address this lack of health options and access. We combine advocacy, health education, research and direct services to improve wellness in local communities. Ultimately, when New Orleans is a city that puts health first, our people will live happier, more resilient lives, and our communities will be stronger!
Adolescent Health:

We support youth in navigating their adolescence, exploring their self-identity, and forming healthy peer relationships. In school and out-of-school environments, IWES creates safe spaces for youth to learn medically-accurate information about their bodies and deepen their understanding of the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, decision-making, and actions, leading to healthy self-esteem and confidence, coping skills, and resilience.
