The International Book Project (IBP) promotes literacy in underserved areas of the world, both domestic and abroad. We do this by promoting literacy through the collection, sorting, and shipment of donated books in response to requests from around the world.

We believe:

  • literacy empowers individuals and provides opportunity
  • in building relationships with local and global organizations
  • in a grassroots donor base
  • everyone deserves access to books
  • worthy books deserve a second life

While we are working hard to promote literacy, the fact remains - people just don't have enough access to books. Our goal is that everyone, regardless of age, race or gender, have access to a quality education. The cost for IBP to send 1 book is $1. That is all it takes to provide opportunity through access to education materials.

This year marks IBP's 50th anniversary and our goal is to ship more than 350,000 books--a far cry from the 10,000 Harriet Van Meter shipped in her first year. Staying true to our grassroots beginnings, we continue to send individually-crafted small shipments of a few dozen books along with pallets and sea containers of books to underserved areas of the world, both domestic and abroad. We've recently launched an e-reader initiative through our Books as Bridges program, which allows young students abroad to have access to even more books! This program connects 50 Kentucky classrooms with overseas classrooms to exchange letters and cultural packages.
